In Mali, our client supports the Action Service of UNMAS, which takes its principal resolution SCR 2227 (2015), to contribute to the following objectives, namely:

  • Reduce the threat may incur MINUSMA and the UN staff by providing specialized training, equipment and supervision of fighting international engineering teams responsible for EOD and C-IED operations, and the awareness of the UN risks personnel.

  • Strengthen national capacities to mitigate the explosive threats through support advice and technical assistance to the Forces of Defence and Security of Mali (MSDS) and advisory support to the National Commission against the proliferation of small arms and small arms (CNLALPC).

  • Improving the protection of civilians by supporting and affecting international demining operators in priority areas contaminated central and northern Mali for educational operations and risks pollution. UNMAS Mali is headquartered in Bamako and six (6) regional offices; Timbuktu, Gao, Kidal and Mopti, Tessalit, Menaka.


Role objective:

Following the recent conflicts in Mali, one Cambodian EOD Peacekeeping company is attached to MINUSMA’s brigades to provide mobility, EOD and C-IED support to MINUSMA and subordinate units in Northern Mali. The unit is located in Gao.

In order to enable this deployment, UNMAS Mali will provide specialist in-country training for up to 70 troops over a 3 week period. To facilitate the training, UNMAS will require experienced interpreters to work with English instructors to ensure the English based training package is delivered effectively by performing the following tasks and key activities:

Expected output:

§ Provide consecutive interpretation services English/Khmer during classroom training, practical training, meetings and other activities.

§ Provide written translation services English/Khmer.

§ Provide any other translation duties as required by the instructors.

§ Provide translation of presentations (including PowerPoint slides and handouts).

§ Provide translation and assistance with the correction of tests and examination papers

§ Translations of aid memoirs and checklists.

Project reporting:

The personnel will report on a weekly basis on the work carried out is support of the training of the Cambodian EOD Teams. The report will include the number of lessons that they have assisted on with interpretation and the number of documents that they have translated from English into Khmer. The personnel will also complete an end of mission report, highlighting the difficulties encountered on this mission and the lessons learned.

Team management:

Team management is not part of this role



§ Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with at least 2 years of experience working as an Interpreter or Translator and/or Certificate in Translation.

Work experience:

§ Minimum of 2 years of demonstrable relevant Translation experience

Geographical experience:

§ Minimum of 2 years of experience in Africa with local experience in Gao is an advantage.


§ Fluency in written and oral Khmer and English are essential.

§ Fluency written and oral in English and Khmer.

§ Good Computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office Package is desired.

§ Experience working in Africa.

§ Physically fit and healthy.
